If I had the time
If I had the time, money, and lived back west, I’d be attending the two week Physical Interaction Design for Music summer workshop at Stanford. Bill Verplank, Michael Gurevich, and Scott Wilson talked about the course at the New Interfaces for Musical Expression conference and it looks like a great experience. Maybe next summer after graduating if I’m jobless.

I took their class three years ago. We built some shoes that responded to your jumps and kicks (”dancing”) by altering the rhythms and dynamics of music. It was a fun class in that you chilled in lab with linux, basic stamps, accelerometers, and other sensors. And you weren’t really prepared to do any of it. But I’d never really witnessed the connection between hardware, software, and hands before. Even if the software was occasionally buggy and they actually attempted to teach musicians C programming in one day. Eek.
