not to toot my horn, but i have fairly robust drawing abilities. so when pictionary would come up at a party, i'd get picked first. however, i found it often difficult and not always the "best" drawer. in hindsight, i believe the trick is rapid interpretation of the question, assimilation of past reservoir of visual knowledge and then fluid conveyance of simple, quick visual metaphors, puns, popular visual cues and so forth that your teammates will pick up on, with ease.

i wonder if todd mcfarlane (comic book artist extraordinaire of spawn, spiderman, etc.) is any good at pictionary?

Bah! drawing skill is not the most important thing in Pictionary. Communication Design majors will everytime because they are taught to communicate visually, while ID students are taught to solve spacial and Human Factors problems.

I know -- when I was a student, we played alot of Pictionary. And without fail, a graphic designer would always win.
