Good design is in the eye of the beholder. But it's great to have some words of wisdom from those who came before us.

nice quote...but then, i recently bought a stapler designed by michael graves (ostensibly) for target. beautiful form, functions like a charm, sturdy body, and nice, good design i think. however, his imprint is all over it, including his signature embossed on the back! and i'm certainly conscious it's a graves/target product, but that makes me happy anyway.

i find it fascinating how there are different schools of thought on what constitutes good design. sometimes transparency is good. sometimes obvious overstatement is good. context matters.

I once saw Richard Saul Wurman speak and he said a common misconception is that people think designs need to be 'simplified'. You may be required to communicate very complex and sophisticated information in a design. The challenge comes in designing for 'clarity'. Good information design takes what normally could seem very complicated and communicates it in a clear and approachable way.
